Sam, a comedian and nanny in Toronto, is hired by an agency to work as a nanny. She meets Brooke, a teen, and Cameron, her father, through the agency. Brooke’s mom and Cameron’s better half is wiped out and in the medical clinic. Brooke initially objects to having a nanny, but Sam develops a relationship with her and the two become close.
In the current day storyline, Brooke is missing, and Sam is battling with PTSD and done performing parody. We are introduced to Sam’s deteriorating relationship with Brooke and her family through a series of flashbacks. As Sam and Brooke become close, Sam turns out to be more enmeshed in the family. At first, Brooke’s father doesn’t see Sam’s comedy as appealing, but he seems to get more into it as time goes on, showing his friends online clips of her performances that include material about her dating and sex life. Brooke’s mom passes on, and Brooke and Cameron lament their misfortune, with Cameron demonstrated to drink more.
Cameron, intoxicated, approaches Sam one night as Sam is leaving to celebrate her anniversary with boyfriend Noah. He makes reference to Sam’s comedy performances in which she describes her preference for rough sex. Cameron’s hostility grows as Sam rejects him. Cameron assaults Sam. Sam, in shock after the attack, goes to wake Brooke, and tells her there is a carbon monoxide break to get her out of the house. Sam and Brooke get into Cameron’s car and drive off, eventually stopping to call the police.
Sam reports the rape to the police after being examined at the hospital. In scenes portraying court procedures, it is shown that Cameron is indicted for the assault and is condemned to five years. Brooke visits Sam’s house in rage and throws a rock through her window and calls Sam a liar. Soon after, she disappears. Sam returns to Brooke and Cameron’s home, entering with the key she actually has. She discovers Brooke’s remains, including her journal, in the house, which has been sold and is now abandoned. In it, she finds a telephone number for somebody named Nathan. He tells her where he is when she calls pretending to be Brooke’s friend. Sam passes on her flat mates’ involved with find Brooke in Niagara Falls and bring her back.
At the point when Sam finds Brooke, she is on drugs, remaining with Nathan, a more seasoned man.
