Ajakaju tells the story of King Towobola, who is troubled by his inability to produce an heir to the throne despite having three queens. The village priests warn him that he has only a few years left to provide an heir, or he will be forced to abdicate and leave the town. The King’s reign becomes increasingly precarious as the years pass without a solution to his problem, casting a shadow over his legacy and the future of his kingdom.
On a fateful day, King Towobola surprises his kingdom by introducing a mysterious new queen named Adaralewa. With no known roots or traceable origins, Adaralewa arouses suspicion among the villagers. Despite this, she soon becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son. Shockingly, upon delivery, she throws the newborn into a fire, inciting the outrage of both the King and the entire kingdom. Remarkably, Adaralewa is given another chance, and once again, she bears a son, only to throw him into a river this time.
As the kingdom grapples with the bizarre and tragic actions of Adaralewa, a flashback is revealed through the King’s narration. The story shifts to a great hunter named Odenla, who once went to offer a sacrifice to the forest spirit to ensure a bountiful hunt. It is then uncovered that Adaralewa is an antelope who shape-shifted into a human to seek revenge for her parents, who were killed by a hunter. This revelation adds a layer of mysticism and deepens the mystery behind Adaralewa’s actions, setting the stage for unraveling her true motives and the impact on King Towobola’s desperate quest for an heir.
