Babes (2024)

Eden, a fiercely independent woman, and her best friend Dawn are out for their annual Thanksgiving outing when Dawn goes into labor. After Dawn gives birth, Eden brings sushi for Dawn and her husband Marty. Rejected by hospital staff, she takes the subway home and meets a man named Claude, with whom she deeply connects over shared losses and relationship troubles. They spend the night together and have sex.

A month later, after being ghosted by Claude, Eden invites Dawn, who is struggling with postpartum issues, for a New Year’s Eve celebration. They get drunk and high, and Eden, in a clear moment, realizes she might be pregnant. Multiple pregnancy tests confirm it, and an ultrasound verifies the pregnancy. Determined to find Claude, she learns from friends that he died the day after Thanksgiving by choking on an almond. Deciding to keep the healthy baby, Eden continues with the pregnancy.

Meanwhile, Dawn and Marty deal with their child’s potty-training regression and struggle to find daycare. During a date night, Eden babysits and shows their child an R-rated movie, “The Omen,” hoping to help him mature.

At a doctor’s appointment where Eden learns the baby’s gender, Dawn has a conflict, so Eden invites her estranged father, leading to their reconciliation. Eden is upset when she discovers Dawn was at home, sparking a confrontation. Dawn criticizes Eden for showing “The Omen” to her child, causing distress and leading Dawn to miss an important meeting. Tensions rise, and Eden is advised to find a doula.

As Eden nears her due date, Dawn continues to struggle with exhaustion and postpartum depression. They plan a “babymoon” to relax, but Eden feels uncomfortable throughout the trip. At dinner, Eden proposes living together, which Dawn rejects, leading to an argument. Eden feels abandoned, while Dawn explains she has her own family and suggests Eden didn’t fully consider the implications of having a baby.

After the trip, Dawn returns home to a plumbing disaster. Both she and Marty express their frustrations about balancing parenthood and work. Dawn is then selected for a commercial shoot in San Francisco. While on the plane, she learns Eden has gone into labor. Rushing to the hospital, Dawn and Eden reconcile just before Eden gives birth to a girl named Claudette.

Afterwards, Eden and Claudette meet Dawn’s family to watch a movie featuring Claude. Dawn then reveals she’s moving back to Eden’s neighborhood, and the friends part with a casual “see you later” instead of “goodbye.”
