Over twelve years after the battle of Calypso’s maelstrom, twelve-year-old Henry Turner boards the Flying Dutchman to inform his father, Will, that the Trident of Poseidon can break the curse binding Will to the Dutchman. Will dismisses the idea, but Henry vows to find Captain Jack Sparrow and the Trident. Nine years later, Henry, now a midshipman in the Royal Navy, survives an attack by Captain Armando Salazar and his ghostly crew, who leave him alive to deliver a message to Jack.
On Saint Martin, Carina Smyth, an astronomer sentenced to death for witchcraft, escapes and meets Jack Sparrow. Jack, experiencing bad luck, trades his compass for a drink, which releases Salazar and his crew from the Devil’s Triangle. Carina joins forces with Henry, and together with Jack, they set sail on the Dying Gull to find the Trident, using clues from Carina’s father’s diary.
Meanwhile, Captain Hector Barbossa learns of Salazar’s return and offers to help find Jack, realizing the Trident could lead to a great treasure. Barbossa allies with Jack, returning the Black Pearl to its original size, and they continue their journey. Jack and Barbossa discover that Carina is Barbossa’s long-lost daughter. They evade a Royal Navy warship and reach the island where the Trident is hidden.
On the island, Jack, Barbossa, and Carina use magic to part the ocean and access the Trident. Salazar possesses Henry to seize the Trident, but Henry destroys it, breaking all curses. The destruction of the Trident causes the sea to close in, and Barbossa sacrifices himself to save the others. Carina realizes Barbossa was her father, and the group escapes.
Later, Henry and Carina reach Port Royal, where Will is freed from the Dutchman, and the Turner family reunites. Henry and Carina kiss, and Jack sails away on the Pearl, adopting Captain Barbossa’s monkey, Jack. In a post-credits scene, Davy Jones appears in Will and Elizabeth’s room, but Will wakes to find no one there, only wet barnacles on the floor, hinting at Jones’ return.
